Medical Services and Standards in (overseas investment properties) Mexico
No commentsBy Julie McFadden
With the large numbers of Americans and Canadians choosing to purchase real estate in mexico and retire in Mexico, a significant issue concerns the availability, quality and cost of DENTAL CARE. This article will assist those who are intending to retire in Mexico:
1. Misconceptions: I have listened too many of my clients respond to my experiences with the medical profession in Mexico and have found that most Americans and Canadians think that the Mexican Medical System is very poor. They are generally quite shocked when I pass on some of our experiences;
2. Comparing: I am a Canadian who is very familiar with the systems in Canada versus Mexico. In Canada, unless it is an emergency, the following is a process that one would go through to get medical services:
a. In Canada:
i. you cannot telephone a specialists office, make an appointment and want to get services;
ii. one must first make an appointment with a General Practitioner which sometimes means a month or more before the appointment can be made;
iii. If one requires the services of a Specialist, it is up to the General Practitioner to make the referral and it is not unheard of that this may be two, three or four months before an appointment can be had. Please keep this in mind as I explain a process we experienced in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico;
b. In Mexico:
i. My wife was in Canada and was returning home on a Friday afternoon, arriving in Puerto Vallarta at 3:30. She had a very bad cough so I made an appointment with our doctor who is a heart specialist as well as being trained as an Internist. She normally does not work that late on a Friday but agreed to stay to see my wife.
ii. Arriving at Lupita’s office, she immediately ordered X-rays which were done and back in her office in about 20 minutes;
iii. There were 15 spots on my wife’s left lung and the immediate conclusion was that this was probably Mastasisis meaning there would be a major cancerous tumor somewhere else in my wife’s body and these spots were a secondary result;
iv. Between 5:00 P.M. on the Friday and 10:00 A.M., the following Monday, this was what was accomplished:
1. A mammogram;
2. Three appointments with specialists;
3. A CatScan,
4. And MRI.
v. On Monday morning, she was scheduled for a biopsy to probe the lung to get samples for testing and the test results were back by Wednesday.
vi. Fortunately for my wife and our family, she was fine and this was a result of some food particles getting into her lung.
vii. When I pass on this experience to both Canadians and Americans, they are almost in disbelief;
viii. The cost of all of those services was less than $2,000 USD.
c. Insurance in Mexico:
i. In comparison to the United States, the cost of acquiring insurance is quite cheap in comparison and it is recommended that it be acquired before you are 65.
Generally we have found the Medical Care to be as good as if not better than that that we are used to in Canada. I cannot speak for those that live in the USA except that Americans that I have discussed this with are amazed at the costs compared to our friends to the north. I have multiple experiences like the above coupled with specialists providing us with their personal cell phone number. They are always very accessible and their highest priority is to the benefit of their patients.
Hoping the information above is helpful, I will be writing many articles to assist Americans and Canadians on decisions regarding Living in Mexico and purchasing real estate in Puerto Vallarta.

Finding Gifts That Fit The Traditional Anniversary Gift List
By Darrin Lowe
People love to celebrate anniversaries, being together another year shows that they truly love each other and they continue to strengthen the bonds and celebrate their union year after year. A lot of couples celebrate this special occasion by giving gifts to each other that symbolizes their anniversary, like “paper” for the 1st year and “leather” for the 5th year. Although following the “Traditional Anniversary Gift List” can sound easy at first, but it can be very difficult and frustrating trying to follow the list for some years.
Sure the Silver, Golden and Diamond anniversaries are easy, its pretty well spelled out. But what about anniversaries like the “Paper” (1st) anniversary or “Steel” (11th) anniversary? These can be difficult for a woman and almost impossible for a man shopping for the perfect gift that will show their love and appreciation of their partner. So with the summer months which are the busy season for weddings and anniversaries approaching fast I thought this would be a good time to start covering each of the years and their symbolic gift.
“Paper” is the traditional symbol of the first year wedding anniversary.
Since the traditional symbol for the 1st wedding anniversary gift is paper, you’ll need to start “thinking outside the box” if you’re going to follow this list successfully.
Some cheaper but very thoughtful gifts of paper would be homemade coupons good for a massage or breakfast in bed, poetry or love letters hand written on nice stationary, homemade greeting cards.
In the moderate price range could be books that would be of interest to the recipient, photographs, you can order a copy of the newspaper from the wedding date that shows what was going on the day of your wedding, tickets to a show or sporting event, posters, board games, puzzles, gift certificates to their favorite stores, stationary, tickets to concerts, or my favorite - paper roses.
While gift cards and gift certificates are acceptable gifts for a couple, I would NOT recommend this as a gift to a spouse, this is your first anniversary together and you need to put a little more thought into it than giving something as impersonal as money.
I personally think that “paper roses” are one of the best first year anniversary gifts available, for two reasons, one - you have the romance and intimacy of roses, two - your able to stay with the “traditional” list of anniversary gifts. A bonus to this idea is that unlike real roses this gift can last forever. I am not talking about artificial flowers here, these are paper roses that are hand made especially for first year anniversaries, you can even have them personalized.
On the more expensive end would be airline tickets to a dream vacation, an oil painting from your wedding photograph, fine art prints.
Just remember, you can express your love and feelings without giving expensive gifts, just put a little thought into it. Love is still the best gift, it is costless yet so pure and irrevocable.
Next week I’ll cover the 2nd/Cotton anniversary.
